It has been my pleasure to teach a person like Justin.”
In his scholarship application, Justin wrote, “Considering that I want to be a music major in college and pursue a career in music, I foresee music playing a tremendous role in my future. Kayla Escobedo
Booker T. Washington High School of Performing and Visual Arts
Nominating AP Art History and 2D Design Teacher: Charlotte Chambliss
Future Plans: Harvard University
Kayla, President of Student Council and Secretary of National Art Honor Society at BTWHSPVA, has inspired students and teachers alike in her indefatigable pursuit of education. Charlotte Chambliss, her AP Studio Art, AP Art History teacher and NAHS sponsor, wrote, “Without a doubt, Kayla is one of the most exceptional students I have had the opportunity to work with in my 18 years of teaching – both academically and artistically. She has an incredible work ethic – putting in the long hours necessary to the success she has achieved. She has an insatiable thirst for learning. Artistically, Kayla is an incredible talent. In all the years that I have taught, I have not seen the likes of the imagery from a high school student that has become the mainstay of Kayla's creative endeavors.”
In her scholarship application, Kayla wrote, “I have always had an obsessive desire for learning and an intensely self-motivated work ethic. I have used my life and everything within it as something to study, to analyze, and to learn from. I have healed by making art and reading books, which offer a much needed escape from reality. I am on the path to finding joy, and I am able to express all that I feel and all that I have seen into my art. I am happy and very hopeful about my future.” See Kaylas' artwork here
Tim Seifert
Ralph H. Poteet High School
Nominating AP Drawing and 2D Design Teacher: Terry Hrehocik
Future Plans: University of Texas at Dallas
With a strong focus on academics and a passion for artistic problem solving, Tim Seifert built a strong high school resume that includes graduating 3 rd in his class at Poteet High School , being a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar with Honors, and the Vice President of the National Art Honor Society. His AP Studio Art teacher, Terry Hrehocik wrote, “Although I have known other students with talent similar to Tim's many of them lacked his good nature and humility, and few demonstrated his genuine intellectual curiosity and considerable self-discipline. Even though he has chosen Engineering as his major, I am confident that the arts will be an important part of Tim's college career as well as his life. As I keep telling him, there is not really that much difference between an artist and an engineer. After all, it is no coincidence that Leonardo da Vinci was both one of the best engineers in European history and one of the world's best painters!”
Tim wrote the following in his application, “The passion I have for creation is never going to just go away, even if I am in a mathematical or engineering field for my career. Just as I will always read for pleasure, I will always have a yearning in my heart to take the time out of my day to step back and fill that always hungry artistic void.”
